The West Holt girls golf team accomplished two impressive feats at their third meet of the season in Ainsworth last Thursday, August 24.

At the peak of the hottest week of the year, ten girls golfers made the trek west to Ainsworth to tackle their competition in the blazing August heat. The meet featured five other teams from the area, including Ainsworth, Valentine, Burwell, O’Neill, and Mullen.

After losing to O’Neill at the first meet of the season by a mere seven strokes, the girls were out for revenge.

The girls came out in the front nine firing on all cylinders. Leading the charge was Daleni Knust, who entered the turn with a 41. Closely behind her was Catarina Ketteler with a 43, Abby Mathis with a 48 and Brooklynn Butterfield with a 49.

Heading into the back nine it was a close call between O’Neill and West Holt for first and second place, meaning the girls would have to kick it into high gear on the back nine to be crowned meet champions.

On the back nine the girls fought off the heat and fatigue, improving their team score by 8 strokes. Contributing to this improvement in a huge way was freshman Brinley Kerkman, who blew her front nine score out of the water with a ten-stroke improvement of a 43 on the back nine to step up and be the fourth score used by West Holt. Also improving their scores on the back nine were the two senior leaders for the Lady Huskies, Ketteler and Mathis.

With these improvements on the back nine the Huskies solidified their spot as the first-place team in the tournament, earning their first team victory of the season against tough competition. The Huskies efforts also earned them a spot in the school record books. With their total team score of 358, the Huskies broke the school record for lowest team score in the history of West Holt girls’ golf, cementing their place in West Holt history.

It wasn’t just the Varsity members who had success at this tournament either, the Husky Junior Varsity team members also dominated in their own way. With a team score of 439, not only were they the top J-V team at the meet, they also defeated two Varsity teams, placing themselves fourth overall as a team.

Five total Huskies earned individual medals en-route to a victory, including one junior varsity competitor and four varsity members. Individual Husky results from the meet are as follows:
