
North Central Public Power District (NCPPD) has announced May 1, 2025, as the beginning of Phase 3 of the City of Plainview electrical system rebuild.
Phase 3, as shown by the nearby map, indicates in yellow the locations where the rebuild will occur. NCPPD has hired Great Plains Power LLC, an electrical contracting company from Grand Island, to do the project. Great Plains Power LLC will be replacing poles and wires.
Some outages could be planned for specific areas as work is being done.

The Plainview Pirates boys and girls track teams continued their regular seasons on Friday, April 4, with the Plainview Ray Doerr Memorial Invite hosted by Plainview Public Schools.
A total of 14 boys’ teams and 12 girls’ teams competed at the Ray Doerr Memorial Invite, which made earning individual medals tough for the large field of athletes.
As a team, the Pirate boys team managed to earn a spot in the top five. With 46 team points scored, the Pirates earned fourth place, just 15 points behind the third-place Norfolk Catholic Knights.


The Plainview Pirate Oral Interpretation of Drama team was recently named as part of the Nebraska School Activities Association’s “Best of the Best” for 2025 program, which will air on Nebraska Public Media.
On Sunday, April 27, the team of Ty Diedrichsen, Jacson King, Karter Lingenfelter, Harrison Thor and Rece Frahm will represent Plainview and Class C-2 with a performance of their State Champion OID from this year’s competition.
The “Best of the Best” program will air at 2 p.m. on Nebraska Public Media that day.
The team joins performers from Minden, Red Cloud, Lincoln East, Broken Bow, McCool Junction, York, Wausa, Bennington and Millard North in their performance for the program.
The Pirate Speech team is under the direction and coaching of educator Michelle Mosel.

Five Plainview Pirate musicians traveled to Kearney over the weekend of the Class C All-State band and choir performances.
Weston Hoffman, Emma Sauser and Landon Hergert all earned spots in the Wind Ensemble performance
Addie Hodson earned a position on the Symphonic Band
Jaden May made the Junior High Band.
The band members are under the direction of Wynter Fulsaas and choir members are under the direction of Brittani Beegle.


By way of a thank you in this week’s News, Dan and Jason Ashburn and families, have announced that the Ashburn Funeral Home in Orchard, Plainview and Osmond has been sold.
Ashburn Funeral Home has been a long-standing Plainview business since 1942 with a three generation history.
Purchasing the business will be Jay and Tina Snider of Snider Memorial Funeral Home of Neligh, Clearwater and Elgin.

The Plainview Pirate band traveled to the State Capitol in Lincoln to participate in the 2025 Capitol Concert Series as an invited guest.
The group played five numbers in the Capitol building’s Rotunda, under the direction of Ms. Wynter Fulsaas, and sponsored by the Nebraska Music Educator’s Association. The 2025 ESU 8 K-12 Art Show will be held at the Antelope County Fair Grounds Building in Neligh available for public viewing from April 11 to April 13.
K-12 student artwork will be displayed from Antelope, Boyd, Holt, Madison, Pierce, Stanton, and Wheeler Counties, all served by ESU 8.
The show will be open to the public for viewing from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day starting Friday, April 11 through Sunday, April 13, 2025.
The show will represent approximately 30 schools and more than 5,500 students in the seven-county area.
There is no fee to enjoy the Art and all are welcome.

Plainview Public Schools has announced the student athletes honored with the first ever Greater Nebraska Athletic Conference All-Conference Basketball selections. This year includes 4 of Plainview’s basketball players from this past season.
Pirate sharpshooter Karter Lingenfelter was the only Plainview athlete named to All-Conference for his superb shooting in this senior campaign.
The Lady Pirates had an honorable mention with sophomore Riley Miller. The Pirates had several honorable mentions with Kohen Lingenfelter, Jacson King, and Wyatt Schroth.






The 2025 Plainview Arts Council presentation of a Murder Mystery Community Theatre event and dinner was held last weekend, with a full house on the case.
This year’s production was “Malachi Stout’s Family Reunion.”
The audience was able to suss out the culprit, who was “Grandma Winifred.”
The event was held in the back room at Mary’s Restaurant in downtown Plainview, and this year’s director was Courtney Retzlaff.


The Plainview Pirate Speech team traveled to Laurel for the Greater Nebraska Activities Conference (GNAC) conference speech meet on March 10, coming home with a host of medals and an eye on Districts on Wednesday.
The Pirates tied in the overall rankings in second with Atkinson’s West Holt, and trailed only the first-place Hartington-Newcastle. Laurel got fourth, Lutheran High Northeast was fifth and Summerland and Elkhorn Valley tied for sixth.


The 2025 Plainview Alumni basketball and volleyball tournaments will be held on Saturday, March 22.
The rules for competition have changed slightly in that only one alumni needs to be on each team to qualify to play.
Teams should contact Whitney White at 402-525-6580 or by private message. Alumni are asked to include their graduation year, and as the event is a fundraiser for a scholarship, there is a fee per player to sign up.
Additionally, there will be a Trivia Night event held at Mary’s Restaurant that evening as well, which will also serve as part of the weekend events.
The trivia event will start at 7 p.m., include four six-person teams, and there will be four rounds of trivia including a bonus round. Food is included in the registration price, there will be raffle prizes, and a cash prize for the top two teams.

The Plainview Public Library will having a “great jigsaw puzzle race” from March 3rd to March 31st.
Form a group of one to six friends and/or family, and come to the library to race to be the first team to complete the same 300-piece puzzle.
Space will be limited to five teams at one time. All ages are welcome.
Please have a team member call the library at 402-582-4507 to register and reserve a time or anyone may stop in the library and register.
There will be times in the morning, afternoon, evenings, and the weekends.

The Plainview Pirate speech team traveled to Laurel-Concord-Coleridge for an invitational last weekend, picking up a host of medals.
The Pirates medaled in every Oral Interpretation of Drama group, along with a number of singles throughout the 10 categories they entered participants in.

The Plainview 5-6th Grade Girls continued their tournament season with a second place finish in Verdigre last weekend.
The team, comprised of Aliyah Pelc, Bentley Dougherty, Bethany Krause, Breanna Hallock, Cara Hoffman, Emalee Mosel, Grace Krause, Jayda Koenig, Jocelynn Buck, Lauryn Krause, Rae White, Shay Miller, and Swayzey Alexander started their season with the Elkhorn Valley League.


The Plainview boys basketball team finished up its regular season with a contest on the road against the Humphrey-Lindsay Bulldogs on Friday, Feb. 21.
Fortunately, the Pirates defense was able to stand strong as time ticked down, and the Bulldog comeback was stifled. When the final buzzer sounded, the Pirates had earned a 54-45 victory in their final game of the season.
With that victory, the Pirates officially closed the book on the 2024-25 regular season. With a record of 15-7, the Pirates have earned the number two seed in the Class C2 Subdistrict Four basketball tournament, which will be held at Summerland High School.

The Plainview Pirate speech team won 5th place overall at the Battle Creek Braves Classic with 46 team points on Saturday, Feb. 22.
Battle Creek won their own invite with 137 team points, Boone Central’s Cardinals were second with 133, David City finished the top three with 127. Schuyler was fourth with 51 points. Other schools were O’Neill, West holt, Stuart, O’Neill St. Mary’s, Valentine, Archangels Catholic, Pierce and Creighton.

Plainview FCCLA members celebrated FCCLA Week by creating different activities throughout Feb. 10-14th that members, all students and staff, and community could participate in.
Members used the proceeds from the candy grams to set up a “Kment Strong Gas Credit Account” at Steinkraus Service in Plainview. Anyone wanting to contribute to the account in the following weeks can stop by Steinkraus’s and do so.
