The Plainview Pirate boys’ track team made a run the second day of the State invite in Omaha last Saturday, and capped off their individual medalist total with Plainview’s first-ever State Track Championship title.

The Pirate boys had 53 team points at the end of the last race, putting them an even 20 points ahead of the competition. Axtell was second with 33 team points, in a three-way tie with Riverside and Mullen. Sterling was fifth with 32 and the remaining field of 46 scoring teams trailed down from there.

Point-scoring performances from junior Spencer Hille, who returned home with four state medals and two first-place finishes; and three medals between seniors, Kyler and Jordan Mosel bolstered the Pirate team score, and was topped off by a fifth-place medalist finish by the 4x800 team – giving the boys the points needed to win.

Kyler Mosel broke a 51-year old Plainview Pirate school record with his 1600m run at the 2023 State Track Invite last weekend. Mosel ran the mile in 4:32.53, finishing two seconds ahead of his predecessor in the record, Lyle Lingenfelter, who held the record since 1971 at 4:34.2. Lingenfelter still holds the 3200m run record at 9:52.1. Fans, family and friends gathered for a special "welcome home" event on Saturday evening between the schools.
