Plainview Library Youth LEGO Club recently received a $500 grant from the Brandon Gerdes Memorial Foundation.
The youth were excited for the funds to purchase new STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Robot Toys to build.
Currently, the LEGO Club has been working on several projects, including Spike, BricQ, Battle Bots, and Boost kits. Many of the robots are controlled with Amazon Fire tablets, or Apple iPads. Some have their own remote-control capabilities.
The LEGO club meets the first Monday of the month and the third Saturday throughout the school year. The Junior LEGO club also meets on the third Saturday. The Juniors build STEM challenges using the vast collection of LEGO pieces kept at the library. In April, the challenge was to build an Eco-friendly habitat for their LEGO characters, in celebration of Earth Day. All children ages Pre-K through 8th Grade are invited to join in the fun.
The grant money will be used to purchase Educational Solar Robot Toys, Science Building Block Kits, and STEM Robot Building Kits. The Brandon Gerdes Memorial Foundation hosts an annual fundraiser, The Brandon Gerdes Memorial Trap Shoot. In the past six years, it has been our privilege to donate over $120,000 to local community programs and projects. Previous recipients include the Future Farmers of America, the Teammates Mentoring Program, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Local Volunteer Fire Departments, Food Pantries, Church Youth Groups, and Christmas Giving Programs among several others.
The fundraiser this year will be held on June 10, 2023. It will include the annual Trap Shoot competition located at the Northeast NE Shooting Association north of Pierce. This is a competition for shooters of all ages and skill levels. New this year is a Golf Outing at the Pierce Community Golf Course in the afternoon. It is a fun and relaxing day filled with competition, raffles and a Silent and Live Auction.
