The Plainview First Congregational United Church of Christ will be celebrating their 120th year of services in the community this month, with a special dedication service during the 10:30 a.m. worship service on Sunday, April 30. As part of the celebration, a new cross and altar background will be a part of the dedication service.

The entire community has been invited to attend the special worship service, and take part in the covered dish luncheon that will follow the service.

The First Congregational Church of Plainview was officially organized on April 13, 1903, but the first minutes of interested parties were recorded in May of 1881.

On Easter sunday of 1903, 77 people became charter members of the First Congregational Church. The first building was dedicated in 1904 - with a choir, prayer meetings, Sunday School,
youth groups, and Ladies Aid as part of the ministries.

In 1913 the parsonage was built, and in 1924 the church was raised and the basement was built underneath the structure. In 1945-48 the church became yoked with the Brunswick church.

In 1961 the church voted to united with the United Church of Christ, retaining the First Congregational name with some division, and an 89-82 vote to unite. In 1987 the kitchen was extensively remodeled, and in 1992 the “eternal light” was installed in memory of Harvey and Theresa Petersen.

In 1996 the church broke its yoke with the Brunswick church, and the group began raising
funds for the fellowship hall, which was dedicated in September of 2001. In 2003 the church celebrated its 100th centennial anniversary.
