St. Rose students make History Day St. Rose of Lima School had seven entries qualify for the State History Day Contest following competition at the District Contest held on March 4 at Northeast Community College, Norfolk. The Crofton FFA chapter took members to the District Career Development Event at Northeast Community College on Monday, February 26. Crofton made it to state in five out of six events which were nursery and landscape, livestock management, environmental and natural resources, agribusiness, and agriscience. The floriculture team also competed at districts, but fell short of qualifying for state... Senior Robbie Fisher etched his name into school history after becoming a three-time State Champion at the 2024 NSAA State Wrestling Tournament. Fisher stated, “I have been working for 14 years, since I was in Pre-K, to achieve this championship.”

The Lady Warriors defeated the #16 seed Ord Chants to punch their ticket to state. The Lady Warriors started off a little slow in the first quarter. The Chants hit two threes to tie it up with five minutes left in the first. The Chants took the lead to end the quarter 14-11. The Warriors battled back and forth throughout the whole second quarter. Senior Ellie Tramp hit a 3 to put the Warriors up by 4. Keeping the momentum, sophomore Jaisie Janssen got an and-one to extend the lead. Janssen stated, “It was a good feeling and the crowd was getting loud.” The Lady Warriors ended the half up by two 24-22. To start off the third quarter senior Caitlin Guenther got an easy bucket to put the Warriors up by 4. The Chants came out after half hitting a quick three but the Warriors slowly started to extend the lead. Juniors Cassie Allen and Jaida Allen each hit a three to keep extending the lead, ending the third quarter 38-32. J. Allen stated, “It made me feel confident and I felt like we were finally hitting shots and working together as a team.” The Warriors continued to dominate throughout the fourth quarter ending it 58-32. Leading the Lady Warriors was Guenther with 14 points, C. Allen added 12 points, and S. Allen added 11 more. The Lady Warriors will be competing in the state tournament on Wednesday, February 28 at 1:30 p.m. against the Clarkson-Leigh Patriots.

The Crofton-Bloomfield Girls Wrestling team competed at state this past weekend with two qualifiers. Both girls came home with medals. Junior Rylie Arens earned a third place medal and Junior Annabelle Poppe earned a fifth place medal. Arens started off the state tournament with a quick 34 second pin against Ellie Scoville of Sumner-Eddyville-Miller. In the quarter finals, Arens got the major decision against her opponent, Andie Gibson of Beatrice. In the semifinal round, Arens dropped her match to Kayden Sipp of Adam Central. On the backside of the bracket, Arens had another quick pin against Ava Mahnke of West Point-Beemer. Arens ended her season with a pin against Gibson of Beatrice and a third place medal. Poppe started off the tournament with a first period pin against Diesel Janovich of Elkhorn. Poppe dropped her quarter finals match to Paola Vergara of O'Neill. Poppe battled back and pinned Bell Brodersen of Boone Central; and in the heartbreak round, she pinned Emma Finecy of Lakeview guaranteeing herself a medal. In the consolation semifinals, Poppe dropped a close match (3-0) to Fabiola Cortez Carcamo of Grand Island. In the fifth and sixth place match, Poppe finished off her season with a pin against Carson Shank of Lincoln East, earning herself a fifth place finish. Poppe stated, “It isn’t the finish I wanted but it is going to make me work harder next year to complete my goal of being a state champion.”
