This past week was a challenging one for the Crofton Bluejays.
The Jays took it on the chin in two South Central League games, losing to Tabor, 12-0 last Thursday, June 4 and then dropping a home matchup against league-leading Yankton on Sunday evening, June 7, 19-7.
On Sunday, the Jays spotted the Lakers nine runs before getting on the board in the bottom of the third inning. It started when James Kaiser walked and then advanced to third on a Jared Wiebelhaus double to right field. Kaiser scored on a wild pitch to get the Jays on the board. A Zach Clark double scored Wiebehaus.
The Jays held Yankton scoreless at the top of the fourth inning, then added four more runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. But that was as close as it would get for the Jays, with Yankton adding runs in the sixth, seventh and ninth inning to run up the score off of 18 hits on the night. Crofton mustered nine hits. Seth Wiebelhaus went 2-4 with 3 RBIs for the Jays. Zach Hegge went 2-5 with an RBI.
The losses push Crofton into the bottom tier of the SCL standings ahead of Irene. At 6-0, Yankton leads the league, followed by Lesterville at 4-1 and Freeman at 3-2.
