The Genoa U.S. Indian School Foundation will hold an Open House on Friday, Feb. 20, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 209 E. Webster Ave., in recognition of LR 280 (2022), the Nebraska legislative resolution that honors and remembers boarding school survivors.

This observance acknowledges the history and lasting impact of government-run boarding schools on Native children, families, and communities. The Genoa U.S. Indian School, which operated from 1884-1934, was one of the largest such institutions in the United States. Today, the museum works to preserve this history and share the stories of resilience and strength within Indigenous communities.

Survivors of the Genoa Industrial School and other boarding schools in Nebraska, along with their families and communities, are hereby acknowledge on this annual date of remembrance. This day serves as a reminder of their experiences and the enduring strength of Native people.

The Genoa U.S. Indian School Foundation will stand in solidarity with institutions and organizations across Nebraska on Feb. 20 with a shared commitment to remembrance and healing. The memorial stone will be illuminated in a symbol of support, visibility, and acknowledgment for all who were impacted by the federal boarding schools system. “Through this gesture, we affirm our dedication to truth, awareness, and the collective journey toward healing.

During the open house, visitors will have the opportunity to:

*Explore exhibits detailing the history of the Genoa U.S. Indian School

*View artifacts and photographs from the boarding school era

*Learn about ongoing efforts to honor survivors and educate future generations.

The event is free and open to the public. All are welcome to attend and take part in this important day of remembrance and learning.
